No sailboat reaches home in a straight line.
Sunday morning, you know exactly who you’re supposed to be. You know the songs,
the answers, the right moment to nod during the sermon. You know your lines.
Monday morning, you’re less sure.
That distance — between the person you present and the person you actually are — is the thing we almost never say out loud, or admit even to ourselves.
So we sit in a room full of people doing exactly the same thing and quietly conclude we’re the only one. I did that for years. I got skilled at looking like a disciple, which turns out to be a different job than becoming one, and considerably easier.
Here’s the question I finally had to ask myself: what if the gap isn’t evidence that I’m failing at discipleship? What if it’s evidence that I’ve been trying to practice a version of discipleship that doesn’t exist?
