No sailboat reaches home in a straight line.
Sunday morning, you know exactly who you’re supposed to be. You know the songs,
the answers, the right moment to nod during the sermon. You know your lines.
Monday morning, you’re less sure.
That distance — between the person you present and the person you actually are — is the thing we almost never say out loud, or admit even to ourselves.
So we sit in a room full of people doing exactly the same thing and quietly conclude we’re the only one. I did that for years. I got skilled at looking like a disciple, which turns out to be a different job than becoming one, and considerably easier.
Here’s the question I finally had to ask myself: what if the gap isn’t evidence that I’m failing at discipleship? What if it’s evidence that I’ve been trying to practice a version of discipleship that doesn’t exist?
These books are about the version that does. Not a line climbing steadily upward, but a sailor working his ship toward home through hundreds of small turns of the rudder, the Holy Spirit filling the sails — which is what following Christ has looked like on every honest day of my life.
Each book takes up one principle and one question a disciple spends a lifetime answering.

In progressThe Wobble Factor is the foundation. The others take their heading from it.
One of them is navigation. The other one only looks like it — and confusing the two is expensive.
A correction made against a bearing you still hold. It is small, it is constant, and it is the signature of growth rather than the evidence of failure.
Movement with no correction in it. Nothing dramatic happens. You simply end up somewhere you never chose, having never once decided to go there.
Underneath both sits the principle the whole series rests on, and it is the only one that gives you anywhere to steer from: I am responsible. Not my pastor. Not my small group. Not my season. Me.
You cannot correct a course from a position you won’t admit you’re in.
A Wobble Factor pocket book about the lie that faith is a private project — read it in a single sitting. It is out now, and it is free.
